Earlier this week, I wanted to really kick-start my first full day at the beach. Since I had done some research before I went, I knew just how to do it: Beach Boot Camp!
Surfside Fitness offers classes in Sea Isle City and Avalon, NJ. Cheryl Herzog led our 8 a.m. boot camp on the beach. I was a little nervous, as I always am when I try a new group activity. But I wasn’t alone. There were about 30 fellow bootcampers who showed up on this warm, overcast morning. Class was $10.00 with no pre-registration required. All you had to bring was a bottle of water and a beach towel.
Don’t let the towel fool you. We got sandy! We started with a warm-up… a jog down the beach with some high knees, slides, and butt kicks thrown in.
After some core work on our towels, we divided up into stations… jumping jacks, jump rope, and medicine balls.
All of the moves were pretty basic, with :30-1:00 rest in between sets. The most challenging part was doing it all in the soft sand! You’d be surprised how much harder simple exercises can be when you’re on an unstable surface! Cheryl presented some options for different ability levels, however. If you moved closer to the ocean where the sand was wet and compact, things got much easier. The farther you were from the ocean, the harder it got!
I really enjoyed this hour-long boot camp! Even though I was sandy and sweaty by the end, I was ready to hit the beach… and I didn’t feel guilty for one minute when Mr. Dish and I didn’t move from our beach blanket for the rest of the day!
