Well, in all the excitement of the running weekend, my MOH and her hubby alerted me to a half marathon in Philly that’s three weeks away – perfectly timed with the Broad Street Run! So after giving ourselves a few days to recover from the BSR, the three of us are now signed up for the Oddyssey Half Marathon on Saturday, May 26! (Yes, it’s spelled with two D’s.)
This is only the third running of this event, and from what I’ve read online it’s come a long way in its three years. It’s relatively small, allowing about 3,500 runners. The course is a loop beginning and ending in Fairmount Park. It’s *odd* name comes from the optional obstacles along the course and the costumes people wear.
Best of all… there’s BEER at the end!
I think it’s a genius move to use the Broad Street timing as a recruiting tool. We’re basically already trained for a half. A PR for me, however, is questionable. I’m not being negative… just realistic. In order to PR in a half (faster than 1:56), I’ll have to run faster than my pace in Broad Street… but just barely. Add in a sizable hill at the end of the course, and I’m going to say that conditions that day are going to have to be darn near perfect for me to stick with an 8:40 pace. I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’ll certainly give it my best shot. Worst case scenario, I’ll get another medal to add to the collection, a sweet beer glass and an adult beverage to go in it.
Has anyone run this race before? Tips? Mr. Dish has already volunteered to be our pit crew/cheerleader, so we’ve got that covered. I think it’ll be a great way to kick off Memorial Day weekend!
