Bridal Dishcamp: DO’s and DON’Ts of Pilates Bands

23 Mar

A few weeks back Kerry and I did what was probably our most enjoyable workout to date at Bridal Bootcamp with Greg.  The entire workout was done using this:

It seems so innocent and unassuming when it's just laying there on the floor.

The pilates band is great for partner workouts and we’ve used it many times before… but this was the first time we’ve done the WHOLE workout using it.  Here’s some of what I learned from Greg during our pilates band workout:

DO:

  • USE A PARTNER!  Handles on both ends make for a perfect two-some toning session.
  • WORK YOUR WHOLE BODY!  I quickly learned that there are LOTS of variations to each exercise, allowing you to work biceps, triceps, shoulders and chest.  Add a lunge at the same time and you’re multi-tasking!

Notice: guns, game face

  • WORK YOUR CORE!  When you switch and your partner is doing bicep curls and lunges, YOU are not resting!  You are squating, working your buns and quads, and you are tightening your core, working your abs!  What seems like rest at first is actually just a different exercise.  (These trainers are veeeeeeery sneaky.)

DON’T:

  • PLAY TUG O’ WAR WITH THE PILATES BAND!  (This one is very important!)  It seemed like a great idea to try to pull one another over an imaginary line by sprinting away from our partner.  This was – at first – very fun and we ended up laughing until our sides hurt as we tried to pull each other across the gym.  Fast forward one week later, and we were at it again… me trying to pull Kerry off balance… when SNAP!!!  The band broke!  We both got elastic whipped and had a nice little welt to show off to our co-workers later.  (It’s totally gone now, the only scars I have are emotional ;)

In closing, pilates bands make for a fun partner workout… I may even try to rope my carb-loving fiance into working out with me!  But – like every bride – they do have their limits.  Stretch them too thin, and they’re sure to SNAP!!!
